Have your heard the good news? Do you know Jesus?
The term "evangelism" is derived from the Greek word "euangelion," which translates to "good news" or "gospel." In our Christian context, evangelism is the commitment to share the Good News of Jesus Christ's life, death, and resurrection with others.
Jesus Christ, at the end of his earthly ministry, commissioned his followers with a vital mission. He said, "Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19). This commission, also known as the Great Commission, has remained at the heart of Christian evangelism.
The primary reason to evangelize is out of love: love for God and love for our fellow human beings. We believe that through Jesus Christ, we can have forgiveness of sins, a personal relationship with God, and eternal life. Evangelism seeks to share this wonderful gift with others.
Every follower of Jesus Christ is called to evangelize. While not everyone may be called to a professional role as an evangelist or missionary, every Christian has a part in sharing the Gospel, whether that be through words or through loving actions that reflect the teachings of Christ.
Your personal testimony of how you came to know Jesus and how he has impacted your life is a powerful tool for evangelism. Personal testimonies carry the authenticity of experience and speak of the transformative power of the Gospel. (visit testifyforjesus.com for more information on personal testimony)
A clear understanding of the Bible, God's word, is crucial. The Gospel message of Jesus Christ’s life, death, and resurrection is in its pages. Studying the Bible helps us understand God's love and Jesus' sacrifice, equipping us to share it with others.
The apostle John wrote, "Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth" (1 John 3:18). Serving and caring for others is a practical demonstration of God's love and can often speak louder than words.
Prayer is an essential component of evangelism. We must pray for those we seek to reach, asking God to work in their hearts and lives. Prayer also prepares us, asking for wisdom, love, and boldness to share the Gospel.
Evangelism can be challenging, as it often involves stepping out of our comfort zones to share our faith with others who may not share our beliefs. It requires patience, understanding, and respect for the other person's journey.
Nevertheless, the rewards of evangelism far outweigh the challenges. There is joy in witnessing others discover the love of God and start their own journey of faith.
Evangelism for Jesus Christ is about sharing the greatest news ever told - the story of Jesus' love and sacrifice for humanity, offering salvation and eternal life. It’s a mission entrusted to every believer, not as a duty, but as a privilege and an expression of love. It’s about reflecting the heart of Jesus, seeking to connect others with God's saving grace. Whether through words or actions, personal testimony or communal worship, every believer can partake in the joyous task of evangelism.
